OPPO’s Reno10 Pro was one of our favourite smartphones of 2023, as it brought an eye-catching design, fantastic camera performance, and a powerhourse spec sheet to the smartphone offering party.

The Reno12 Pro simply builds upon this by squeezing a stylish but tough high-strength alloy framework able to offer robust protection against drops, pressure, and water into a sleek 161.5 x 74.8 x 7.45mm (about 181g) frame that catches the eyes of onlookers thanks to OPPO’s Futuristic Fluid Design.

Under that attractive and thin body resides some potent specs once more as you get 12GB RAM worth of LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2133MHz, along with 512GB internal storage (double the Reno10 Pro’s amount), and a suitably larger 5000mAh that can last a day and a half for power users while also capable of fast recharge times thanks to SUPERVOOC 2.0.

Multimedia is displayed via OPPO’s lovely 6.7″ FHD + (2412 x 1080) screen that boasts really nice colours and crisp details (a scrumptouos 394PPI) while mobile gamers will appreciate the fact that it is also capable of running at a refresh rate of 120Hz.

While this Flexible AMOLED with four curved sides of equal height certainly makes movies, YouTube videos, or photos pop, the one thing we feel is kind of meh is the speaker performance by comparison, as the Samsung Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 Pro for instance had better quality sound to match the stunning visuals delivered by their screens. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which the clumsy amongst mobile phone users will appreciate.

For content creation, you get some clever AI tech to match the fantastic optical hardware, which in this instance is a 50MP (f/1.8,FOV 79°, AF) main snapper supported by an 8MP (f/2.2, FOV 112°, 5P lens) Ultra-wide angle camera and unusually high-definition 50MP (f/2.0, FOV 50°, 5P lens, AF supported) Telephoto camera. OPPO has committed to to making AI phones accessible to everyone by bringing Generative AI features to about 50 million smartphone users by 2024 and the camera is one area where you can see this commitment in action and one of the most beneficial by far for the end-user. You get features such as AI Eraser 2.0 which allows you to simply click on objects such as a passer by in order to remove them from your photos or to delete other unwanted objects with ease – all you need do is just circle or tap for seamless photo ‘repairs’. Another very handy AI camera feature is Ultra Night Mode which is a game-changer enabling users to capture stunning photos even in challenging low-light conditions by analysing the physical surrounding environments to automatically adjust lighting levels in the pic.

Selfie lovers aren’t left out of the snapper party due to the Reno12 Pro’s 50MP (f/2.0, FOV 90°, 5P lens, AF supported) that is not just capable of capturing gorgeos looking selfies and portrait shots, it can also record 4K video at 30fps like the rear camera (notably better than par for the course here).

Keeping things smooth and snappy within ColorOS 14.1 based on Android 14 is MediaTek’s Dimensity 7300-Energy CPU that sports 8 cores and an Arm Mali-G615
GPU. Also aboard this smartphone is 5G connectivity to make it future-proof, plus OPPO’s 80W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge technology, ensuring ultra-long battery life and lightning-fast charging. The battery can reach 32% in just 10 minutes and 100% in 46 minutes.

The OPPO Reno12 Pro can be had for as low as R16 999 from local retailers like takealot which is around R1000 less than a Galaxy S24 with half the amount of storage and a smaller display and battery. Other devices worth considering in that ballpark is Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G with 512 GB storage (R18k). All in all OPPO has done a great job with their Reno12 Pro which again finds itself amongst our favourite and highly recommended list of devices for 2024.
