Every day new drivers are taking to our roads for the very first time. For many the feelings are a combination of nervousness and elation as they realise that freedom and destiny await them.

The launch of the Ford Model T in the 1900s enabled millions of people to explore the world around them at their own time and leisure. More than a century later and the company has remained true to the principles that, in order to fulfill this sense of freedom, transport needs to be affordable, accessible and reliable.

“It’s on this historic Freedom Day that Ford South Africa pays tribute to vehicles and mobility, which have given many South Africans their key to endless freedom and amazing destinations,” says Atloli Lesela, Brand Manager at Ford South Africa.

“The car is no longer viewed solely as a means of getting from point A to point B. At Ford, we see the car as part of a much bigger picture, a way to enhance one’s own individual strengths and passions and connect or unite with those around us,” says Lesela.

The Ford Figo has been specially designed to provide the most complete customer and ownership experience. The Figo’s impressive and value-positioned features make it the perfect starting point to becoming a licensed driver. Ford South Africa has highlighted five Figo features that will allow any new driver to confidently take to the road on Freedom Day this year.

Power on demand

A zippy 1.5-litre petrol engine provides 91kW and 150Nm, and uses an aluminium engine block and cylinder head for reduced weight. The engine also relies on twin independent variable camshaft timing (TiVCT) to deliver improved low-down torque as well as top-end power.

Thanks to this modern drivetrain, the Figo delivers both impressive fuel economy and low running costs. With fuel prices returning to former highs, more and more buyers are considering economy as a key deciding factor when purchasing a new vehicle.

Manual or automatic? You’re in control

Whether you like to control the gears yourself or sit back and let the Figo’s automatic transmission do the work for you, very few cars in the Figo’s class offer both options. The five-speed manual comes with a new Eco mode and shift indicator which helps the driver maximise the balance between power and efficiency. The new six-speed automatic has been refined to provide a smooth, effortless drive and has, therefore, become a popular choice for those who regularly drive in heavy traffic.

Feel protected wherever you go

The Figo might be Ford’s entry-level model but there is no compromise on safety when at the wheel. Driver and passenger airbags are fitted as standard while Titanium models benefit from the fitment of dual side and full-length curtain airbags. This is enhanced by the standard fitment of anti-lock brakes. In addition, the unique Ford MyKey on the Titanium allows owners to programme a key for younger drivers that can inhibit incoming phone calls, restrict top speed and even disable the audio system altogether if occupants are not using safety belts.

Stay connected

Figo Titanium models are equipped with Ford’s flagship SYNC 3 multimedia system which boasts smartphone integration provided through either Apple CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto. This transforms the Figo’s services and entertainment, including the use of the latest navigation services and audio streaming. To reduce on-road distraction, many of these functions can be controlled through voice recognition and buttons mounted conveniently on the steering wheel.

The Figo comes standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year or 120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty. A four-year/60 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals. The customer experience is further enhanced by a wide service network comprising over 100 dealers countrywide.

“It’s that freedom to choose your own path in life that vehicles like the well-rounded Ford Figo make possible,” concludes Lesela.
