As we commemorate Human Rights Day, it is crucial to reflect on our history and the impact of systemic discrimination, but more importantly, we need to reflect on how we can actively build a more equitable future, particularly within the workplace, writes Ms. Zola Ngoma, Coega’s Unit Head of Human Resources. For the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), this is a fundamental principle woven into the fabric of our organisation.
As a public entity, the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa is the basis of all organisational policies. It is the origin of our commitment to fairness and dignity. From our training and development policies, designed to address equity and advance socio-economic development, to our remuneration policies, ensuring fair labour practices and economic justice, the spirit of our Constitution guides our actions.
As an employer, Coega’s contribution to social justice extends beyond legal compliance. We strive to create gainful economic opportunities through employment, training, and initiatives such as the Coega Internship Programme. We recognise that economic empowerment has a profound social impact, fostering positive change within local communities.
In fostering a positive workplace culture, one human right stands out: the right to expression. In environments where dilemmas and divergent views may arise, it is vital that individuals feel safe to express themselves.
We must encourage and amplify diverse voices to enrich our ideas and shape a brighter future. This approach fosters transparency, integrity and dynamism in the workplace and the wider community.
By embracing the spirit of Human Rights Day, Coega is committed to nurturing a workplace where fairness and justice prevail. This commitment goes beyond a single day; it is a continuous journey towards a more equitable and just future for all.
